gamescom 2011

Summary of gamescom 2011

This edition of gamescom was a massive success and has produced some very impressive numbers: more than 275,000 visitors played 300 games from all genres, with over 550 exhibitors from 40 countries playing host to the hoards of gamers. It well deserves the title of world's biggest game exhibition!

NCsoft, ArenaNet and Carbine Studios were attending in full force. This year we revealed a new MMO (the now well known) WildStar and introduced 2 new races and PvP for the hugely anticipated Guild Wars 2. We unleashed a schedule packed with great activities punctuated with some very cool swag, including thousands of carrier bags that could be seen on everyone's shoulders!

The show was hot: the PCs, cameras, crew and environment were turned up to max!

We took lots of pictures of the teams, the activities and the public that you can check out on our gamescom 2011 Flickr set. You'll be able to admire some of the best, funniest and loveliest moments including our Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 cosplay contest and the highly amusing WildStar emote contest.

We had a live stream running throughout the entire show where you could catch all the booth activity. If you missed the stream or just want to recall these special moments, we also uploaded several Q&A videos, demos, trailers for WildStar and Guild Wars 2. The team is currently editing a gamescom summary video (available shortly) which demonstrates the incredible atmosphere we have lived and breathed this past week. So head onto our NCsoft West YouTube channel, get some popcorn and get ready for the show!

Throughout the event we posted daily summaries of on our centralised gamescom 2011 Event page. All future events will be covered here, so you always know where to go for the latest updates.

All in all, we had a smashing time. Watching our fans waving hands, jumping, screaming and simply enjoy our games was a delight! We're exhausted, deaf, have lost our voices and can't feel our feet, but we are so grateful to have you as fans. Together we put on one hell of a show!

We can't wait for the next show and the chance to see you all again, YOU ROCK!

Summary of Day 5

Repeated echoes emanate from the stage: "I say Guild and you say Wars", "I say Wild and you say Star"! These lines that Nima got the crowd to scream are going to stay in our heads for a long time!

So that's it for gamescom this year. We've had an amazing time in Cologne, Germany, with Guild Wars 2 and WildStar fans. Today constituted a natural ending of this hectic celebration to gaming.

To end with a flourish, we had some truly amazing sessions on our stage: the WildStar emote contest made us laugh, the WildStar live drawing session impressed us and the Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 cosplay contest amazed us! An amazing Sylvari (Caroline, from France) eventually won the first prize from a line-up of very impressive participants with a truly realistic leather costume, she surely has some serious crafting skills!

Also, Andy Cotnam (Senior Concept Artist) showed us once again what he was capable of by executing the public wishes live to give life to this brand new aquatic creature called "Metal Maw" that will be implemented in game at a later date.

Be sure to check our flickr feed as well as our YouTube channel for the latest images and videos.

With this last day we say farewell to gamescom 2011. We hope you enjoyed following our adventures online, and hope you'll be here for the next show! Thank you and see you soon!

Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 Cosplay Contest

As always the cosplay contest on the final day of gamescom at the NCsoft booth was extremely popular, this year we limited it to only costumes with a Guild Wars theme. But that didn't stop the fans from rolling in in their droves. This years judges were Colin Johanson, Mike Z, Ree Soesbee and John Ryan.

One by one, the conestants paraded infront of the stage to show off their creations to the massive crowd in front of them. However much of a cliche it may be, all the participants deserved to win. It was very clear to us that they had all put a lot of work into their costumes and accessories. The jury had a tough job before them, but a decision to appoint a winner had to be made.

With no further ado, please find below the three winners of the ArenaNet Cosplay Contest gamescom 2011. Head on over to our Flickr feed for the full line-up!

1st Place:

Character: Caithe (Guild Wars 2)
Caithe is a firstborn sylvari of the Cycle of the Night and a thief, notable for being a former member of Destiny's Edge. She is unusual in that whilst most sylvari are creatures of light, she has never feared "gazing into the darkness" to seek "truths that others fear."

2nd Place:

Character: Male Dervish (Guild Wars)
Bolstered by the blessings of the gods, these holy warriors reap the benefits of multiple Enchantments. With a sharpened scythe, the Dervish can unleash a whirlwind of destruction.

3rd Place:

Character: Asura (Guild Wars 2)
The asura are a race of diminutive artisans who secretly dwelt below-ground for thousands of years until the minions of the Great Destroyer forced them out of their underground homes 250 years ago.

Summary of Day 4

The sun shone down on the fourth day of gamescom 2011, greeting record numbers of attendees.

Both the show and the booth reached maximum capacity, with the NCsoft crowd surpassing anything we have seen so far. It's the largest, wildest, loudest one here. Over 250,000 visitors are expected this year and most will be taking advantage of a day off and arriving this weekend. Many believe even this figure will be exceeded.

Throughout the day the sound level at the booth has erupted with the cheering from the horde of faithful gamers. Music, chanting and shouting stage moderators competed to dominate. Our main stage moderator, Nima, definitely knows how to get the Koelnmesse crowd going and the ground shaking.

As with previous days, fans enjoyed a constant flow of activities throughout the day, be it demos, Q&A sessions or simply the times when it was raining swag. Chad Moore (Lead Creative Designer) from Carbine Studio team answered questions from the crowd, revealing that PvP will be a large part of WildStar! We also learned that the bike featured in the trailer is a mount from the game!

Similarly, ArenaNet answered the public's questions about Guild Wars 2, the Hall of monuments and of course PvP. Lead Content Designer Colin Johanson and Lead Game Designer Eric Flannum even received presents from a fan during their Q&A! Later, Game Designers Isaiah Cartwright and Jonathan Sharp gave us more details about PvP maps.

We have some brand new videos and photos to share with you today so make sure to head on over to our Events page to catch up with the day's events. Fans can also re-live the madness by streaming recordings of the day's sessions.

Make sure to bookmark the page and return tomorrow for the show's final day, as always Sunday on the NCsoft Booth is Community day so expect plenty more craziness tomorrow!

Summary of Day 3

Friday is always a busy day at gamescom. The rain didn't stop scores of fans visiting the show and NCsoft's booth. It was intense but nothing will compare to tomorrow, Saturday, when a massive (and likely record) number of visitors are expected.

Today's schedule was packed to bursting and followed the same spirit as the day before. The Guild Wars 2 lore team; Ree Soesbee (Game Designer) and John Ryan (Writer) answered questions selected from Twitter and members of the public. Relishing the moment, Ree revealed that she was writing the Guild Wars 2 book, "Sea of Sorrows". Exciting reading in the offing! By the way, don't forget to express your love of the game and vote for Guild Wars 2 on the IGN's gamescom People's Choice Award.

During the afternoon, the Carbine Studios art team demonstrated their skills with an impressive live drawing session. Lead Concept Artist Andy Cotnam, sitting backstage, brought to life some awesome mobs while Art Director Matt Mocarski engaged the crowd from the stage. It was a truly inspiring event.

New photographs and videos have been uploaded to our flickr feed and YouTube channel, including the historical moment when WildStar was revealed to the world.

Don't forget to bookmark our gamescom 2011 event page! The booth will be busier than ever this coming weekend, catch all the action on the live video stream!

Summary of Day 2

The NCsoft, Carbine and ArenaNet teams have seen an incredibly busy day pass, and it's only the first day of what we like to call the "gamescom madness". For the first time this year, the show opened its doors to the public. Against all odds, the crowd queuing outside the Koelnmesse was even bigger than last year. The doors opened at 10am local time and, without fail, the excited German public came running to the NCsoft booth.

Today's schedule was tightly packed, all the way from 10am until 8pm. Needless to say, enormous amounts of players invaded our booth throughout the entire day, forming an impressive sight. It's honestly hard to pick what was the most popular activity of the day. Between several demos of WildStar and Guild Wars 2, we also had four Q&As with the devs from Carbine and ArenaNet.

The first team to face the public questions was Carbine team: Loic Claveau (European Community Lead), Matt Mocarski (Art director), Robert Land (Senior Community Manager) and Troy Hewitt (Executive Producer). They talked about several things like where they got inspiration for the game, how long they started working on the game, high level content, gameplayand they even said gamescom was the coolest show they've been to!

Then Daniel Dociu (Art director) and Kekai Kotaki (Concept Artist), from ArenaNet, came on stage to have a chat about art in Guild Wars 2. They gave very interesting answers about how important the art team is in the process of creating a new video game, how you become an art team member in a studio and how some of their ideas made it into the game when they really didn't expect it! Later, Colin Johanson (Lead Content Designer) and Eric Flannum (Lead Game Designer) went through the character customisation and dug into Guild Wars 2 design.

A new batch of beautiful photographs has been added to our flickr feed, and we'll keep updating it on every day of the show!

Stay tuned to the event page! We have yet another schedule packed to the brim for day three tomorrow and a live video stream dedicated to bringing all the gamescom 2011 glory direct to your house!

Summary of Day 1

Hi peeps,

Our first day at gamescom is now over and what a day! Even though the show was open to press and traders only, we gathered a huge crowd at our booth. We had two worldwide exclusive events: The reveal of Carbine Studios™ new MMO called WildStar and the Guild Wars 2 PvP brought to light for the first time!

This morning at 9.15 am local time, after some "torturous" teasing, the curtain fell to reveal WildStar, the new awaited MMO from Carbine Studio. After the trailer, Carbine Studio Manager, Jeremy Gaffney, introduced Carbine's world to The World. This new MMO will offer you a complete new game experience that you can already try on a playable demo available at NCsoft booth. To know more about the gameplay and style jump on the brand new WildStar website.

Not long after this special moment, ArenaNet represented by Lead Content Designer, Colin Johanson and Lead Game Designer, Eric Flannum , took the stage to showcase a brand new trailer and introduce the new playable demo that you'll be able to get your hands on tomorrow. One of the highlights, The Battle of Khylo PvP map is now playable at the ESL's booth! To know more about Guild Wars 2 PvP, check out this article.

Don't waste another minute and join us here at gamescom.

See you tomorrow at the booth!

ArenaNet Blog - Guild Wars 2 demo at gamescom 2011

With San Diego Comic Con now behind us, we shift our focus across the Atlantic to gamescom, Europe's largest game expo. This annual celebration of games and entertainment takes over Cologne once again from August 17-21, and we're going to be there in full force - and we're bringing a shiny new GW2 demo with us!

The new demo will feature a ton of cool new content that we haven't showcased before.  "What exactly is in the gamescom demo, Martin?" I hear you say. Well, I'm glad you asked. Let me give you a high level overview of what you will be able to play at the NCsoft Booth (A11/B10, Hall 9.1).

Seven professions  - Play all seven professions that we've revealed so far: engineer, thief, guardian, necromancer, ranger, warrior, and elementalist.

Charr starter experience  - For the first time, you can forge your destiny as a member of the Iron, Ash, or Blood Legion in our charr starter area. You can also choose to play the human and norn starting experience as well.

Mid level demo  - As always, we've prepared a higher level demo experience for players who want a challenge. Face powerful Orrian enemies on land, engage them in battle underwater and face off against a new boss.

Sylvari and Asura  - Did I mention that you'll be playing sylvari and asura characters for this high level content? Yes, for the first time, players will be able to get their hands on these unique races - believe me, they are impressive!

Character appearance customization  - Also for the first time, you'll be able to play around with our character appearance customization feature and control the way your character looks.

PvP  - Last but certainly not least, we're premiering Guild Wars 2 Player vs Player (PvP) at gamescom! Swing by the ESL booth and head to the Guild Wars 2 area to get your exclusive hands-on PvP experience. Also check out our periodic exhibition matches that pit our valiant team of ArenaNet developers against the European guild Boon Control on the ESL center stage!

We hope that you are now as excited about gamescom as we are. If you can't make it to gamescom this year, you might want to check out the latest issues of these magazines for more info: Buffed, PC Gamer UK, Canard PC, Gamereactor, PC Gameplay Benelux.

And don't forget about our  Costume Competition on Sunday, August 21!

See you at the show!

The world's biggest annual gaming convention, gamescom, is a little over than one month away and if you're lucky enough to be attending in Cologne, Germany, you will have the chance to meet members of the great NCsoft® staff family, get your hands on the latest build of Guild Wars 2® and socialise with fellow gamers!

Once again, we will have an action-packed schedule prepared to keep you entertained throughout the show and we are sure that you'll be happy to hear that the famous NCsoft® cosplay contest will be returning.

Over the years the cosplay competition has become a true NCsoft® tradition and this year is no different. You will have the opportunity to win great prizes and to show your passion for Guild Wars® and Guild Wars 2®. Dress up as your favourite Guild Wars® or Guild Wars 2® character for your chance to win big!

As we get closer to gamescom, we'll unveil more details, so keep an eye on our website and on the ArenaNet blog to make sure not to miss any exciting news.

Good luck with your costumes. We look forward to meeting you in a few weeks to see your great creations!
