gamescom 2010

Summary of gamescom 2010

505 exhibitors fought for the attention of over 250,000 visitors in this year's iteration of gamescom, the world's largest game exhibition. NCsoft and ArenaNet attended in full force and unleashed a schedule packed with cool activities onto the unsuspecting show visitors.

Our cameras ran hot throughout the show, and the NCsoft West flickr album exists to somewhat prove this theorem. We capture several snapshots from the NCsoft cosplay contest held on Sunday, where an impressive Guilds Wars 2 Asura walked away as winner. The contributions were awesome though, and we'd like it to be known, simply in order to spice things up with a cliché, that if we could have given everyone a first prize, we would have!

The NCsoft West YouTube channel is an excellent resource for event coverage. We had a live stream running throughout the entire show where you could catch everything we did online. Just in case you missed the stream, we made sure to upload high definition copies of our intense schedule's most notable events. Head on over right away and have a look at the on-stage interviews with Aion Producer Chris Hager, or Jiho Lee and Seungwuk Baek from the Korean development team.  You might also want to have a look at our cool summary video manifesting the incredible atmosphere we lived and breathed during the week.

News coverage was posted throughout the event on our centralized gamescom 2010 event page. We'll continue this tradition during future events to ensure that you have one single place to go to for relevant updates.

All in all, we had a smashing time. Seeing the ocean of hands wave in the air is a majestic sight forceful enough to put anyone in awe. The hall our booth was located in is known for being one of the loudest halls, a battlefield of noise, a no-man's-land where the weakest fade into oblivion and the strongest echo towards the horizon. To that end, our entire team has now been isolated in soothing underground cocoons for sound rehabilitation.

We can't wait for the next show and chance to meet you all in person!

The Final Day of gamescom 2010

Sleep deprivation hits us with little to no warning, a drone-like state in a borderig dreamland pulls us in and leads us on. Thank God for the lively cheers of the masses gathered at our booth, and thank God for coffee. Repeated echoes enamate from the stage: "I say Guild, you say Wars", "I say games, you say com".

Insistently, they etch imprints we'll always carry with us onto our minds.

It's difficult to believe that gamescom, a world in its own right, has now ceased to exist. The memories will however remain for a long time!

We've had an amazing week in Cologne, Germany, with Guild Wars 2 and Aion fans alike. Today constituted a natural ending of this majestic celebration to gaming. To honor the day, the Guild Wars team decided to mix it up a little bit and offered demos in English and with a couple of extras up their sleeves. A competitive cosplay contest followed, where the winner - a Guild Wars Asuran - was eventually chosen from a lineup of very impressive participants. Scroll down our event page to learn more about the cosplay contest!

A Q&A session held with Guild Wars 2 Lead Game Designer Eric Flannum has been uploaded to YouTube, where it joins the ranks of our many other gamescom 2010 videos. Be sure to also check our updated flickr feed for the latest photos!

With this news post we bid farewell to gamescom for this time. We hope you enjoyed following our adventures online, and would like to welcome you back next time that we're on the road!

Don't forget to continue to follow the continued developments of Guild Wars 2 and Aion!

Cosplay Contest Impresses

The crowd grew silent as the jury approached the stage. Two were representatives of ArenaNet and two represented the house of NCsoft. They took place near the stage's back and awaited the start of the official NCsoft gamescom 2010 cosplay contest.

One by one, the conestants were soon led up onto the stage to show their creations off to the massive crowd in front of them. However much of a cliche it may be, all participants deserved to win. It was very clear to us that they had all put a lot of work into their costumes and accessories (e.g. the tiny Aion Wind Spirit). The jury had a tough assignment before their feet, but a decision to appoint a winner had to be made.

With no further ado, please find below the three winners of the NCsoft gamescom 2010 cosplay contest. Head on over to our flicker feed for the full line-up!

Character: Asura (Guild Wars 2)
The Asura are a race of diminutive but incredibly intelligent humanoids who live beneath the surface of Tyria.

Character: Elyos Sorceress (Aion)
The Sorcerer is a Daeva who follows the Star of Magic. They are able to freely wield the destructive power of the natural elements: Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water.

Character: Ritualist (Guild Wars 2)
Ritualists channel otherworldly energies that summon allies from the void.

The weekend arrived; gamescom 2010 was hit for 250,000 damage.

The crowd at our booth is unsurpassed. It's the largest one out there. It's the wildest one out there. It's the loudest one out there. They're expecting more than 250,000 visitors this year and most of these visitors tend to make their way to the show during the weekend, since that's when everyone is off from school and work.

A couple of us are wearing ear plugs. It started out with one of the IT guys wearing them to cope with the noise while crawling around inside the pods out on the showfloor. More and more members of the team have since then realized how soothing the silence can be, and are now floating around backstage with giant marshmallows sticking out their ears. The plugs help their carrier by blocking out a lot of noise while still letting conversation come through. There really isn't any part of the sound spectrum left untouched throughout a day at gamescom. The noise begins at the darkest bass frequencies, manifested through constant drum thumps hitting the showfloor's every corner and continues relentlessly upwards the frecency ladder. And if there's one thing you can't escape, it's the resonance!

The sounds are at their strongest in the middle registers, where music, chanting and shouting stage moderators compete to dominate and stand out. Our main stage moderator's called Nima and has a pretty solid routine to get the crowd going by now. We just found that another booth nearby copied the routine last night, rhetorical exercise by exercise, chant by chant. But copies are bland and people return for the original.

Fortunately high pitched noise is quite rare around here, but for as long as we have goodies to give away (including sweet, sweet Guild Wars 2 t-shirts) there will be hands clapping and voices breaking barriers that should never be broken. It remains uncertain whether they're the same every day, but a few girls tend to gather just around the stage when it's time for swag to rain down, and consistently pull eyes towards them with razor sharp screams.

We have a few brand new videos to share with you today! Our video editor has been crazy at work to compile recorded versions of some of the past few days' stage activities. First out is a recoded version of yesterday's Q&A with Guild Wars 2 Game Designer Isaiah "Izzy" Cartwright. We've also uploaded yesterday's Q&A with Aion Producer Chris Hager, as well as a glorious snapshot of Guild Wars 2 being awarded Best Online Game of gamescom 2010. Don't miss them!

Bookmark this page immediately and make sure to return tomorrow for the show's final day!

Summary of Day 2

Friday is always a busy day at gamescom. It's more intense than the Thursday and constitutes a natural ramp-up to the massive visitor numbers expected tomorrow, Saturday.

Today's schedule was packed to bursting and followed the same spirit as the day before. Guild Wars 2 Art Director Daniel Dociu, Designer & Writer Jeff Grubb, Game Designer Isaiah "Izzy" Cartwright and Aion Producer Chris Hager were all participating in our lively stage activities, and some stage appearances from Day 1 are starting to trickle their way to YouTube. The first video up is from Colin Johanson's day one live Q&A session.

New photographs have been uploaded to our flickr feed, including a monumental photo taken when Guild Wars 2 was awarded the prize for Best Online Game of gamescom 2010! The competition for the award was definitely no piece of cake this year, and the ArenaNet team is both honored and proud to receive such a fantastic token of appreciation for their hard and devoted game development up until this point.

Don't forget to bookmark our gamescom 2010 event page! Our booth will be busier than ever this coming weekend, so don't miss the live video stream!

Guild Wars 2 - Best Online Game of gamescom 2010!

ArenaNet is proud to announce that Guild Wars 2 has been awarded the prize for Best Online Game of gamescom 2010! We are honored and delighted to receive this award, following up on winning the same prize for Aion exactly one year ago.

ArenaNet staff is playing the online hands-on Guild Wars 2 demo all the way from the studio in North America, linked together with the masses of fans at gamescom. Members of staff are also available directly on the show floor to help players out and to answer their questions.

We'd like to thank our gamescom collaborators Razer, Alienware, nVidia, Flashpoint and Intel. We'd also like to send a special thank you to our wonderful fans in Cologne and the rest of the world!

Summary of Day 1

The Aion and Guild Wars 2 teams have seen an incredibly busy day pass today! While preparations and lighter activities began yesterday, Wednesday, it wasn't until today that the public was admitted entrance to the exhibition halls.

Today's schedule was tightly packed, all the way from 11:00 in the morning until 19:00 in the evening. Needless to say, enormous crowds invaded our booth throughout the entire day, forming such impressive masses that we had to call on external help to keep the flow going. Most popular was today's book signing with ArenaNet's Jeff Grubb, where the line stretched around the entire back of the booth.

Jiho Lee and Seungwuk Baek joined us for the day all the way from Korea, where they're normally members of Aion's development team. They answered questions from the crowd and Twitter, concerning some of Aion's design choices, fortress siege performance and the game's future. They were followed by Guild Wars 2 Art Director Daniel Dociu, Designer & Writer Jeff Grubb, Lead Content Designer Colin Johanson and Aion Producer Chris Hager. We're working on compiling videos out of all of today's live Q&A sessions, and hope to have these available shortly!

A new batch of beautiful photographs have been added to our flickr feed, and we'll keep updating it day by day moving onwards!

Stay tuned to the event page! We have yet another schedule packed to bursting for day two, and a video live stream dedicated to bringing all the gamescom 2010 glory back to your house!

The Very Glorious Loot of gamescom 2010

Make your way to the NCSOFT booth at gamescom this year and you'll be in for a real treat! Aside from an insanely packed schedule, we're bringing tons of Very Glorious Loot (VGL) for you to clasp your quick fingers around in a tight embrace and take home. The loveable swag to keep a look-out for includes everything from shiny Guild Wars 2 and Aion: Assault on Balaurea posters to Shugo stress toys for post-madness relaxation and hot Guild Wars 2 tattoos (tattoos can be cool even if they're not permanent).

Throughout the ages, parents have consistently pestered their children to pack well and properly whenever setting off for travel. Well, there's no need for that this year. If you stop by our booth you may be lucky to catch one of our super-stylish black Guild Wars 2 t-shirts.

There'll be a near constant rain of swag descending from the mighty NCSOFT stage. Don't skimp out on your push-ups, you'll need the strong arms to compete for four different varieties of temporary Guild Wars 2 and Aion themed tattoos, sleek Aion wristbands and dazzling white Guild Wars 2/ArenaNet lanyards.

Gamescom is all about being loud and making a statement. Sure, it's also about games, but mostly about noise. Help us contribute to the atmospheric cheers and celebration using a very handy Guild Wars 2 and Aion clap banner. A clap banner is fundamentally made from thick paper, folded in a particular way to allow for the creation of serious sound waves. Their noise is not quite on par with the sound of vuvuzelas, but we have high hopes of them terminating any sense of tranquillity all the same.

"Gosh, that's a lot of stuff," you're probably thinking to yourself after having spent a minute or two pondering the above.

You're right, it sure is a lot of stuff, and we wouldn't be so cruel as to leave you stranded without anywhere to put it all. That's why we're giving out awesome, large carrier bags featuring stunning Guild Wars 2 and Aion artwork. Thank us later.

Pack light. See you there.

NCSOFT gamescom Booth Sneak Peek Preview

Gamescom is an event of humongous proportions, and the time spent in intense preparation spans months before the gates actually open (August 19th-22nd).

The NCSOFT booth, showcasing the amazing Guild Wars 2 and Aion: Assault on Balaurea, will this year again be situated in Hall 9, slot A11. It will also be officially awesome.

Coming to a large game show for the first time can be chocking. The immense crowds can overwhelm a first-timer, and the grand scale of the show floor would potentially have confused Cristopher Columbus himself. You need a beacon, a point of origin, and we want the NCSOFT booth to be just that. Let's have a look at a couple of booth 3D renders to give you an idea of what to keep your eyes open for.

3D Render 3D Render 3D Render

The construction team is currently mid-way through getting the booth ready for the massive crowds that will flow through it shortly. We were able to get our hands on a couple of photos to show the progress they've been making. Construction began earlier this week and will run over the weekend before reaching completion by the time gamescom opens.

3D Render 3D Render 3D Render

Make sure to visit us if you want to get a good look of the final version! We will provide online coverage throughout the show, but it's no secret that everything is cooler live.

See you there!
